When you rent you are not able to change your outlets. Your landlord must change them for you. What happens if your landlord doesn't want to change them or the "electrician/handyman" doesn't do it properly. By following these instructions, you can build an adapter that is safer then the two to three prong one you can buy at the store using the NEC "No Equipment Ground" method. Note that the GCFI or AFCI used should have a built-in current limit breaker on it for 15 amps.
Materials needed:

Strip the ends of the 14 gauge wire just enough for the plug to mount the plug.
Mount the plug.
Knock out one of the knockouts in the box and attach the cable clamp
strip the 14 gauge wire back longer and attach it to the cable clamp
Attach the black wire to the brass "line" terminal of the GCFI.
Attach the white wire to the silver "line" terminal of the GCFI.
Screw the receptacle to the box.
Tighten both of the "load" screws and the ground screw. There should be nothing attached to them.
Put on the cover plate. (not too tight as it might break.)
Note: You need to follow the current NEC rules and guidelines.
